Opposite Life Brenthurst Hospital is the Portuguese Medical Institute, with highly competent Portuguese-speaking doctors in attendance.

  • A 24-hour accident and emergency unit is manned 24x7x365, and supported around the clock by resident specialists

  • A radiology facility, with a comprehensive range of sophisticated diagnostic equipment including:
    • CT scanner
    • MRI scanner
  • A 20 bed maternity unit with well-appointed wards and secure facilities. This unit is ably supported by antenatal and postnatal clinics as well as a well baby and immunisation clinic
  • A 10 bed neonatal intensive care unit complete with state-of-the-art monitoring and life support equipment providing the best possible environment for our smallest patients

Travel Clinic
"Travellers should check if their immunisation status is up to date according to the national recommendations of their home country and their country of destination.

Life Brenthurst Travel Clinic has a portfolio of vaccines/prophylactic medications for diseases such as Yellow Fever, Meningitis, Malaria, etc.

Travellers going abroad can be at low or high risk, depending on several factors such as: destination, location within a country, purpose of travel, length of stay and type of accommodation.

In addition, GP and Sports Medicine services (by a qualified Sports Physician) are also offered at the clinic."

Maternity Unit`s Accommodation

  • Private ward - own bath room facilities, TV and telephone
  • Semi-private ward - two beds sharing bathroom facilities, TV

  • Please note: private facilities subject to availability, should the unit be full – patient will be moved to private ward once available/asap. Please speak to the Unit Manager before your visit should you wish to make use of a private facility

Paediatric Ward`s Accommodation

  • Isolation cubicles
  • Rest Room for Mothers (Mothers whose children are admitted as patients in both private rooms and the general ward are able to stay in the hospital free of charge.)


  • Private patients are required to settle their accounts in full (i.e. if the balance of the account of the final bill exceeds the deposit) on discharge.
  • Day patients undergoing surgery under anaesthetic should arrange for transport from the hospital - it is illegal to drive for 24 hours following anaesthetic.


In order to ensure a smooth admission process, patients are advised to visit our Pre-admission clinic at least a day prior to admission. Please be advised, patients who are not pre-admitted may experience prolonged delays on the day of admission:

  • Original ID/Passport
  • Current Medical Aid Card
  • Pre-authorisation from medical aid
  • Deposits/Co-payments – where applicable
  • X-rays, if applicable
  • A parent or legal guardian must accompany all patients under 18 years.
  • Maternity bed bookings can be made here, an administration fee of R280 is required.
  • Expectant mothers that deliver at Life Brenthurst are entitled to a free 4D scan at our clinic, this is advisable from 28-32 weeks of pregnancy.
  • These scans take place every alternate Tuesday’s and Saturday’s, bookings can be made at Pre-admissions.
  • If you have booked at Life Brenthurst Hospital, please visit the maternity ward at 37 weeks in order for the nursing staff to obtain a full medical history from you as patient before admission.

Service Monitoring

In keeping with our goal to continue providing high quality care, we monitor our service to patients on an ongoing basis. On discharge patients are asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their stay in the Clinic. Participation is voluntary, but it does help management to address any problems and to improve the quality of service that we provide to you.

The Brenthurst Clinic charges medical aid tariffs, i.e. contracted in fees. The patient on discharge must settle surcharges for private rooms, in full.

Visitor Information

We welcome all of our patients’ visitors, as we know what a difference the support of close family and friends can make. In order to ensure the safety of our patients and to provide our patients with the maximum amount of rest, we request that all visitors please strictly adhere to the below times:

General Ward:

  • 11h00 - 12h00
  • 15h00 - 16h00
  • 19h00 - 20h00

Maternity Unit:

  • Husbands: 08h00 to 20h00
  • Grandparents, family and friends: 11h00 - 12h00, 15h00 - 16h00, 19h00 - 20h00

Paediatric Ward:

  • Mother and Father: 08h00 to 20h00
  • Others: 11h00 - 12h00, 15h00 - 16h00, 19h00 - 20h00 (please arrange with parents and the Sister in Charge)

Neo-Natal ICU:

  • Mother and Father: 08h00 to 20h00
  • Grandparents: 15h00 - 16h00

ICU And High Care Ward:

  • 11h00 - 12h00
  • 15h00 - 16h00
  • 19h00 - 20h00

Other Criteria for the ICU and High Care Ward

  • Only immediate family members are allowed
  • No children under 12 years old are allowed in the ICU ward
  • A maximum of two visitors per patient at a time are allowed
  • No cellular phones are to be used in the ICU ward
