Our facilities
The Life Sports Science Orthopaedic Surgical Day Centre is situated adjacent to the existing Sports Science Institute complex in Newlands, Cape Town. The historic Mariendahl Terrace cottages have been converted to accommodate this highly specialised facility.
Theatres The two theatres at the centre are equipped with the latest technology for orthopaedic surgery. Dedicated surgical nursing staff ensures efficiency, continuity and a high standard of care in theatre.
Day ward The day ward has four beds and two lazy boys to accommodate six patients. Orthopaedic nursing staff provides high quality of care.
Surgeons The surgeons are all super-specialised and only practice in their specific field of orthopaedic surgery. Most are associated with the University of Cape Town’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Groote Schuur and are involved in teaching and research.
Associated units The centre is linked to the Life Orthopaedic Hospital and to the Orthopaedic Sports Clinic at the Sports Science Institute.

Admission
The following items are required for admission:
- Current medical aid membership card
- Identity document
- Pre-authorisation number, if applicable
- X-rays, if applicable
- Medication, if in use
- Personal clothing and toiletries
A parent or legal guardian must accompany all patients under 18 years.
Discharge
Day patients undergoing surgery under anaesthetic should arrange for transport from the centre. It is not advisable to drive for 24 hours following an anaesthetic.

Service monitoring
In keeping with our goal to continue providing high quality care, we monitor our service to patients on an ongoing basis. On discharge patients are asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their stay in hospital. Participation is voluntary, but it does assist management in addressing any problems and improving our service. We especially welcome any suggestions you may have.
Tariffs
Life Sports Science Orthopaedic Surgical Day Centre charges medical aid tariffs according to scale of benefits.
- Private patients and members of certain medical aids will be required to pay a deposit prior to admission, and to settle their accounts in full on discharge.
- Medical aid and medical insurance scheme members are advised to check the extent of their coverage prior to admission, and to obtain a pre-authorisation number from their funder, if applicable.
