  • 220 beds and ten theatres, three of which are fitted with laminar flow;
  • A 24-hour emergency unit with resident practitioners trained in emergency medical care and supported by resident specialists;
  • A 23 bed medical and surgical ICU equipped with leading diagnostic and monitoring facilities;
  • An eight bed day clinic;
  • A 23 bed maternity unit with well-appointed wards and secure facilities. This unit is ably supported by a postnatal clinic , baby clinic and offer antenatal classes;
  • A ten bed neonatal intensive care unit complete with state-of-the-art monitoring and life support equipment providing the best possible environment for our smallest patients;
  • A neurology laboratory;
  • 3-D sonography;
  • An infertility clinic consisting of five gynaecologists and two embryologists;

Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital offers our community a 24 hour accident and emergency unit should they have a medical emergency. The practice is supported by dedicated resident doctors available 24 hours, with a triage system in place.

At the Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital, we take pride in providing you information that you need in order to make your stay with us a pleasant and hassle-free experience.

Accommodation at our hospital is extensive and includes:

We also offer TVs in all of our wards.

An a la carte menu is available.


Our admission process can be made much easier for you, if the following simple guidelines are followed.

  • Medical aid patients should check with their medical aid / scheme prior to admission to obtain pre-authorisation, if deemed necessary by the medical aid / scheme.
  • Patients have to present their medical aid card and identity document on admission. Persons under the age of 18 have to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • To speed up admission, a pre-admission form is available from the resident doctor`s rooms and the hospital`s reception. Phone number 011 796 6611/6771.

On leaving, do not forget to collect your medication and x-rays. You will be given a discharge card to hand in at the reception desk in the foyer as you leave.


The Ward
A service is offered in the ward to register your baby: you will be notified when the certificate is ready for collection.
Birth Registrations: Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays

Baby Clinic
The sister form the baby clinic visits the ward three days a week for immunization. (Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays)
A nominal fee will be charged for BCG and polio drops.
Please do a follow up visit at her baby clinic.

On day of discharge please bring a car seat or carry cot to take baby home in. Please ensure that you know how to use the car seat.

Pre admissions clinic

The purpose of this clinic is to assist patient by filling out the required documentation ahead of time in order to make the day of the planned admission easier for them. The pre-admission staff will assist patients with obtaining authorisation from their medical aid but it remains the patient’s responsibility to obtain authorisation. Use of this facility can greatly reduce stress and anxiety for the patient planning an operation.

It is very important to pay a visit to our Pre Admission Clinic 48 hours prior to admission into hospital.

The Pre-Admission Clinic is open 24/7 in main reception for all your pre-hospitalisation questions and admission requirements – Phone number 011 796 6584/6771.

  • Medical aid patients should check with their medical aid / scheme prior to admission to obtain pre-authorisation, it remains the patient’s responsibility to obtain the authorization number.
  • Please refer to your medical aid for any co payments you may be required to pay upfront.
  • Patients have to present their medical aid card and identity document on admission. Persons under the age of 18 have to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The post natal ward consists of:

  • Two X three bedded rooms
  • Four X two bedded rooms
  • Two X three bedded rooms
  • Three X private rooms/with own bathroom

The private and semi private rooms are available on a “first come first serve basis”. Please keep your beautiful flowers and gifts to a minimum: you will appreciate them much more at home.

Labour Ward:

  • Your labour will be progressed in the room you will deliver in.
  • Pain relief will be administered according to your preference.
  • Feel free to bring your birthing plan along.
  • Please feel free to bring along CD player, books or games to keep you occupied.
  • Facilities for water births are not available.

Registration of babies

Public Relations Officer (PRO)

Our public relations officer serves as a link between the hospital, patients, doctors and staff. Should you need any assistance please contact the officer at the reception desk of our hospital. If you are from out of town, the PRO and reception desk has a list of accommodation near the hospital for family members.

Renal Unit

We have a 7 bed renal dialysis unit. Contact one of the Nephrologists working at the hospital.

Service monitoring

In keeping with our goal to continue providing high quality care, we monitor our service to patients on an ongoing basis. On discharge patients will receive an SMS to rate their stay at the hospital. Participation is voluntary, but this will assist the hospital management to address any problems and improve our service to you.

  • Our hospital charges patients at medical aid / medical scheme rates.
  • A prepayment is required on hospitalisation, from patients not covered by medical aid or a medical scheme.
  • It is recommended that private patients contact the hospital`s accounts department prior to admission to establish the estimated hospital cost.

Visiting hours

We welcome all of our patients’ visitors, as we know what a difference the support of close family and friends can make.

In light of this we have decided to open our visiting hours in the general wards

Please note that our patients do need their rest to recover, therefore we ask all visitors co-operation to keep the noise levels down between 13h00 and 15h00, during Rest and Sleep time.
