Overview
We offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy at our Life Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the administration of 100% oxygen, breathed under increased
environmental pressure and delivered to the tissues by means of blood circulation.
Arterial blood oxygen levels 1 200% higher than normal are routinely achieved through
hyperbaric oxygen treatment, inducing physiological effects only available at these
oxygen doses thus affording the body the opportunity to combat infection, heal problem
wounds, and survive certain life-threatening conditions. The hyperbaric oxygen therapy
service is an invaluable adjunct to a multi-disciplinary treatment plan in cases
of:
- acute crush injuries
- carbon monoxide poisoning
- late complications of radiation therapy for cancer
- decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism
- diabetic wounds
- failing grafts and flaps
- necrotising infections and gangrene; and
- refractory osteomyelitis.
